Maine College of Art & Design

Maine College of Art & Design
Maine College of Art & Design

AD: Stephen Bowden

I was delighted to have the opportunity to create the 140th Anniversary illustration for MECA&D’s self promotional and marketing materials. The illustration features elements from various art and social movements over the last 140 years of the school’s existence. The image is in a loose timeline from top right to bottom left.

MECA&D Window

During the creation of the promotional anniversary image, I had the opportunity to develop another sketch into a final and install it on the front window of MECA&D’s amazing Porteous Building in Portland, ME. I also inked up the pencils as another standalone piece of promo material.

The image was installed with bistro markers (chalk markers) over the course of a week in Fall ‘22.

These maps were all created for the book “Marvel Universe: Map by Map” by James Hill and Nick Jones and published by DK Publishing (UK). The artwork was art directed by Clive Savage and Chef Ridout, and two other illustrators contributed some really great maps: Adam Simpson and Matt Taylor. I grew up a huge Marvel fan so this was a treat.

The Ten Realms
The Ten Realms

Marvel Ten Realms were based off of Norse Mythology and mixed with Jack Kirby’s fantastic surreal and psychedelic vision into an incredible pastiche of science fiction and medieval magic. The original nine are Asgard, Midgard (Earth), Vanaheim, Alfheim, Nidavellir, Jotunheim, Niffleheim, Svartalfheim, and Muspelheim and recently expanded with cast out realm of Heven, dominion of the Angels.

The Infernal Realms
The Infernal Realms

Marvel’s various “Hells” have created a their own hierarchy of devils and demi-gods who control the various Underworlds of the Marvel Universe. Some are demons like Belasco and Thog, while others more versions of conventional “Satans” like Mephisto, Marduk Kurios, and Satannish. At the bottom is the One Below All, one half of universe spanning power of destruction and hate, and a source of power for the Hulk.

I was thrilled to be contacted by Justin Simien’s office to create an illustrated map T-shirt design for his brilliant Netflix show “Dear White People”, which follow the characters from the brilliant movie of the same name. Many of the building use exteriors from UCLA, with some other locations. But the show rarely shows the full building so I had to put that together myself. The Merkle Boner
The Merkle Boner

This piece was commissioned by the National Pastime Museum and commemorates one of the most controversial plays of all time, the Merkle Boner, or Merkle's Boner. Through a convoluted series of events, a small baserunning error by Fred Merkle (under a previously unenforced rule) caused the NY Giants to lose a late season game to the Cubs. The season ended in a tie between the Cubs and the Giants, and then a one game playoff which the Giants lost. The Cubs went on to win the World Series, their last of the 20th century. Fred Merkle never lived down his small mistake, and it haunted him for the rest of his life.

Archived Bears

Sometimes, you get to do jobs just for fun. Here's two jobs which were for people I particularly like, and were particularly fun. The Archive(d) Bears were my beloved Saturday McCarren Park softball team from 2009-11. The Bears as a team were, and are . . . well, sometimes great, sometimes not when it comes to actually playing softball. But it was a great group of interesting and smart people and still is today. I was twice asked to sub-in for my cousin and amazing designer (and lefty power hitter) James Tischler and do a team T-shirt, which was an honor. Go Bears.
